Why Zhen Yi
Zhen Yi, born Fu Yishan, spent eighteen years in major Chinese hospitals and served as lead surgeon in more than 3,000 spinal operations. Alongside medicine, he describes a lifelong engagement with Chinese medicine, Daoist practice, and Buddhist teachings.
His years in surgery place his writing in a life shaped by discipline, responsibility, and sustained contact with human vulnerability. Medical training and cultivation remain distinct fields; the biography helps readers understand the questions that shaped his work.
